Follow Your Passion – How to Create a Job You Love

A panel of Media, Arts and Humanities graduates discussed how they turned their passion into a career they love.

Find something you love to do, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” Is there something you love doing? Ever wondered how you could turn this passion into work? This event heard from a panel of Sussex Media, Arts and Humanities graduates who have done exactly that. They shared their stories and the tactics they used to create or find a job they love. Sussex students currently following their passion alongside their studies were also featured.​ Following the panel talks, there was a Q&A session.

Jack Burgess
History and American Studies BA, 2013
Jack Burgess graduated from Sussex in 2013 with a BA in History & American Studies. Originally from SE London, he moved to Portland, OR, USA in 2014. He currently works full time as the Executive Director of Willamette Writers – a nonprofit organization helping writers in Oregon connect with their community, develop their craft, and expand their careers. On evenings and weekends, he moonlights as a songwriter, and works with several sync licensing companies to pitch original music to TV, film, and advertising clients. So far, he has most notably landed spots with the Disney Channel, Vice, Orange, and Cartoon Network, amongst others

Solmaz Aslan
Philosophy BA, 2019
Assistant Manager at Platform B Radio Station. Platform B is a not-for-profit Brighton-based next generation radio station broadcasting online since 2016 and on 105.5 fm and DAB since 1st October 2018. The station is directed by a new wave of DJs, producers and presenters who are re-imagining and diversifying the medium with music and youth programming from a studio based in the Green Door Store, a music venue underneath Brighton station.

Music and Sonic Media MA, 2020
Founder of Curious Connectors, a creative studio that will deliver experiential installations built around engaging the senses of touch, taste, sound and smell.
